The art of layering between seasons
Combine a light base, balanced proportions and a practical outer layer to build outfits that adapt to changing temperatures.
Layering offers flexibility when mornings are cool and afternoons warmer. Begin with a light, comfortable piece against the skin, then add a shirt, fine knit or jacket. Choose the outer layer according to the forecast and how long you will spend outside; outerwear is not automatically waterproof.
Make sure the layers sit comfortably together. A bulky sleeve under a narrow jacket can restrict movement. Balance fuller upper layers with simpler bottoms. A small contrast at the collar or cuffs adds depth without needing several competing patterns.
When choosing a trench coat, vest or coat, consider materials and care instructions as well as appearance. Plan a bag that can hold layers removed during the day. Air and store outerwear according to its label after use. Successful layering is about pieces you can add or remove when needed, rather than simply wearing more clothes.
